Rare Original 396/425HP 1 of Only 759 N14 Side Exhaust 4-Speed CCAS Certified
Corvette aficionados will find a tantalizing prospective addition to their collections in this remarkably original 1965 Sting Ray Coupe. Unrestored and showing a mere 73,000 original miles, it is one of just 2,157 Corvettes produced in 1965 with the vaunted L78 396/425 HP Mark IV big-block V-8 introduced that year. The L78 replaced the L76 327/375 HP small-block V-8 as Corvette's most powerful carbureted engine.
Designed to withstand the rigors of competition, the L78's 396 CI block incorporated a strong bottom end with reinforced bulkheads and 4-bolt main bearing caps. The rotating assembly centered on a forged steel, cross-drilled crankshaft actuating forged steel alloy connecting rods held in place by aircraft-grade bolts. Forged aluminum pistons produced an 11.0:1 compression ratio, and the L78's canted valve heads enabled excellent flow, thanks to generous porting and a high-lift, high-duration, solid-lifter camshaft actuating large-diameter 2.19-inch intake and 1.72-inch exhaust valves. Fed by a single high-flow Holley 4-barrel carburetor on an aluminum intake manifold, the L78 cranked out an honest 425 HP at 6,400 RPM and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM to make it the most powerful engine ever to occupy Corvette's engine room.
Presenting in astoundingly original condition, the 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe offered here retains its original L78 Mark IV engine Certified by CCAS and a 4-speed manual transmission. A true driver's machine that will appeal to the purist Gorgeous Rally Red exterior brightwork and standard black vinyl interior. Further equipped with period-look Bias-Ply Gold line tires on Knock-off Style wheels, , Soft Ray-tinted Glass, chromed driver's mirror and a Delco AM/FM radio, this exceedingly rare 1965 L78 4-speed Coupe is a potential candidate for additional Bloomington Gold and NCRS honors.
