  • For 1966, Chevrolet upsized the 396 Mark IV bigblock powerplant to RPO (Regular Production Option) L72 427 CI standard and hinted at its true potency by first announcing it with 450 factoryrated HP, but then inexplicably switching to an “official” 425 HP rating. Few enthusiasts and buyers were fooled, considering the L72's 11.0:1 compression ratio, hot solidlifter cam and valvetrain, freeflowing rectangularport cylinder heads and virtually bulletproof cylinder block with a forged crank at its heart. Ticking the box for the L72 option also specified a mandatory K66 transistorized ignition system and Muncie 4speed manual transmission, while air conditioning was simply unavailable.
  • Despite considerable weight of some 650 pounds, the alliron L72 powerplant did not adversely affect the Corvette's nearperfect weight distribution and excellent handling characteristics, thanks to low and setback engine placement in the Corvette chassis. The L72 427/425 engine was a firebreathing behemoth and especially potent in the lightweight Corvette with high 12second quartermile times and top speeds beyond 150 MPH possible, with tires erupting in clouds of smoke when the clutch was dropped. Today, L72powered Corvettes continue to deliver a sensory assault in keeping with the secondgeneration Corvette Sting Ray's aggressive and almost otherworldly styling, harnessed by 4wheel disc brakes with 4piston calipers and ventilated rotors and riding on allindependent underpinnings.
  • Retaining its bornwith original L72 427/425 HP engine, original trim tag and all matchingnumbers components, this outstanding 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427/425 HP Convertible is a freshly completed professional frameoff restoration completed in October 2020 by the awardwinning team led by Corvette expert Joe Verrillo. In addition to an M21 closeratio 4speed manual transmission and transistorized ignition system, the Corvette features a Positraction rear axle, N14 side exhaust, power antenna, teakwood steering wheel, telescopic steering column, Soft Raytinted glass, an AM/FM radio with power antenna, and knockoff aluminum wheels mounting periodstyle goldline 7.75x15 tires. A truly rare find, even in today's classiccar market, this freshly and expertly restored 427/425 HP Corvette convertible beautifully exemplifies “America's Sports Car” in its top available specification for 1966.
