This exceptional 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible is a magnificent Original L72 Engine example . Built at the St. Louis assembly plant in December 20 1965, it is one of 5,258 1966 Corvettes equipped at the factory with the mighty L72 427/425 HP Mark IV big-block V-8 engine introduced that year. This Corvette was the Recipient of a Frame off Restoration By the talented team at Verrillo Motor Car Co. Completed in 2022 All components were restored to factory Appearance and functionality as they were when this Corvette rolled off the assembly line in December of 1965. .

In superseding the L78 396 CI big-block V-8 offered the previous year, Chevrolet offered two versions of the 427: the relatively mild hydraulic-cammed L76 rated at 390 HP, and the aforementioned L72. A fearsome powerplant by any measure, the L72 followed the same basic formula as its L78 predecessor, the exception being its larger displacement, with the use of a forged and Tufftrided steel crank and rods, forged aluminum pistons and 11.0:1 compression, as opposed to the 10.25:1 in the L36. A single high-flow Holley 4-barrel carburetor fed the air/fuel charge through an aluminum intake manifold to rectangular-port heads fitted with 2.19-inch intake and 1.72-inch exhaust valves actuated by solid lifters.

While Chevrolet rated early production units at 450 HP, the “official” figure was reduced to 425 HP, likely to avoid grabbing too much attention from insurance companies. Whatever the reason, no-one doubted the L72's towering output, including Car and Driver Magazine's editors, who wrote, “Chevrolet insists that there are only 425 horses in there, and we'll just have to take their word for it.”

For enthusiasts and collectors, this 1966 L72 convertible is one of the ultimate production Corvettes in the marque's history. Draped in Tuxedo Black with a black interior, its 427/425 HP big-block is backed by a Muncie M21 close ratio 4-speed manual transmission and a stout 3:70 Posi-traction differential. Soft Ray-tinted glass, K66 transistorized ignition, factory side exhaust, a telescoping steering column, Teakwood steering Wheel and an AM/FM radio add further value to this very desirable, big-block, 4-speed Sting Ray convertible.
